Where you stay decides how your fete weekend feels. Stay close to the action and you can be home and asleep before the sun is fully up. Stay on the far side of the island and you get quiet beaches, but a longer ride at 7am.
Midnight Riot is at Muse on 3077 Kronprindsens Gade in Charlotte Amalie, the island's capital. Here is how each part of St. Thomas stacks up for fete weekend.
Downtown Charlotte Amalie
Best for: being close to everything.
Downtown is the historic heart of St. Thomas, with old warehouses, steep step streets, shops and restaurants. It is where Muse is and where much of carnival week happens.
- Pros: the shortest trip to and from the fete, easy access to carnival events, food and nightlife nearby.
- Cons: busy and loud during carnival week, fewer beaches within walking distance, and parking can be tight.
- Good for: groups who want to be in the middle of it and do not plan to drive.
Frenchtown
Best for: food lovers who want to stay close.
Just west of downtown, Frenchtown is a small waterfront neighborhood known for restaurants and bars, with a quieter feel than the center of town.
- Pros: a short ride to the venue, great dinner options before the fete, a calmer place to sleep after.
- Cons: limited lodging options, so book early.
Havensight and Yacht Haven Grande
Best for: marina views and a short ride downtown.
East of downtown along the harbor, this area includes the main cruise ship dock, the marina at Yacht Haven Grande, shops and restaurants.
- Pros: close to downtown, lots of food options, easy taxi access.
- Cons: busy on cruise ship days, and it can feel more commercial than local.
Airport area and Lindbergh Bay
Best for: beach time with an easy airport run.
Near Cyril E. King Airport on the west side, you will find beachfront hotels around Lindbergh Bay and nearby beaches.
- Pros: a beach right outside your room, a short ride to downtown and the airport, ideal if you are flying in and out on tight timing.
- Cons: you will need a taxi or car for everything, and some planes fly overhead.
South shore resorts
Best for: a resort weekend with the fete as the main event.
The south side of the island, east of the harbor, has several larger resorts and beaches like Morningstar and Bolongo Bay.
- Pros: pools, beaches and resort comforts for the recovery day.
- Cons: you will rely on taxis or a car for the fete. Arrange your pickup in advance.
East End and Red Hook
Best for: combining the fete with St. John.
The East End is where you catch the ferry to St. John from Red Hook. It has its own bars, restaurants and beaches like Sapphire and Secret Harbour.
- Pros: lively nightlife, beautiful beaches, easy day trips to St. John.
- Cons: the farthest part of the island from downtown. The ride to and from Muse is longer, especially in carnival week traffic.
North side and villas
Best for: big groups who want space.
The hills above Charlotte Amalie and the north side, toward Magens Bay, are full of private villas with views. Renting a villa can be a great value for a large crew.
- Pros: space, privacy, kitchens and big views.
- Cons: steep, winding roads that are not fun after a long night. Plan your rides carefully.
Which one should you choose?
- Here mainly for the fete: stay downtown, in Frenchtown or in Havensight.
- Here for a beach vacation with one big night: the airport beaches or the south shore resorts.
- Adding St. John: the East End, or split your stay.
- Traveling with a big group: a villa, with taxis booked ahead for fete night.
Booking tips for carnival week
- Book as early as you can. Carnival week is one of the busiest weeks of the year on St. Thomas.
- Check the dates carefully. Midnight Riot runs 1:00 AM - 7:00 AM on April 29, 2027, so you need a bed for the night before and the morning after.
- Ask about late check-out for the day after the fete, or book an extra night.
- Ask your host about towels and paint. Bring your own old towel for after the fete, and rinse off outside or in the shower before using hotel linens.
- Save a taxi number from your hotel or host for fete night.
After the fete
Wherever you stay, plan your recovery: a big breakfast, water, a long nap and a quiet afternoon by the water. You earned it.
