The first rule of dressing for a paint and powder fete: wear something you are willing to ruin. The second rule: wear something you can move in for six hours. Everything else is style.
Here is how to dress for Midnight Riot and any J'ouvert style fete where color is part of the night.
Start with the right colors
Black or white holds pigment best. White turns into a canvas, so every splash of neon shows up in photos. Black makes paint glow under the lights and hides the wear. Both work. Pick one and commit.
Bright colors can clash with the paint and end up looking muddy by sunrise. Patterns get lost entirely. Keep the base simple and let the night add the color.
Outfits that work
- Tanks, tees and crop tops. Light, breathable and easy to move in. Old ones are perfect. Event merch is made for exactly this.
- Shorts, biker shorts or leggings. Choose fabric that stays comfortable when wet.
- Swimwear as a base layer. Many people wear a swimsuit underneath so they can strip down a layer when the heat climbs.
- Customized pieces. Cut, tie and distress old shirts. The more DIY, the more J'ouvert.
- Themed touches. Midnight Riot: Born to Fete lives in a dystopian, high-energy world. Chrome, spikes, utility straps and hard edges fit right in.
What to skip
- Anything dry clean only, borrowed or sentimental.
- Suede, leather or anything that stains for life.
- Long, heavy fabrics that hold water and weigh you down.
- Loose jewelry, real gold and watches you care about. Paint gets into everything.
- Expensive wigs or extensions you plan to wear again.
Shoes: the most important choice
Closed shoes with grip. Not sandals, not slides, not your best sneakers. Floors get slick with paint and water, and crowds mean stepped-on toes. The best options:
- Old sneakers you can throw away or hose down after.
- Canvas shoes in black or white.
- Boots with good soles if you want a heavier look.
Tie them tight. A lost shoe at 4am is a bad story.
Protect your eyes
Paint and powder are part of the experience, and your eyes are the one thing you want to keep clear. Sunglasses or clear glasses help a lot when the color starts flying. If you wear contact lenses, consider glasses for the night or bring a spare pair and drops in a sealed bag.
Hair
Assume your hair will be colored by sunrise. A few ways to manage it:
- Tie it up and back, braids and buns hold up best.
- Wear a bandana, cap or headwrap. It also looks good in photos.
- A little leave-in conditioner or oil before you go helps paint rinse out more easily.
- If you have just colored or treated your hair, cover it fully.
Skin prep
A light layer of lotion, oil or petroleum jelly on your arms, legs and face before the fete creates a barrier that makes paint easier to wash off. Do a patch test with any new product a day or two before. Wear sunscreen if you plan to stay for sunrise and the morning after.
Nails and makeup
Dark nail polish keeps your nails from staining. Skip heavy makeup, since it will be gone in the first hour. Glitter, face gems and waterproof liner, on the other hand, survive and look great under the lights.
Bags and pockets
Less is more. A small crossbody bag or a waist bag worn in front is easier to keep track of than a backpack. Put your phone in a waterproof pouch. Our fete survival kit lists exactly what to bring and what to leave home.
After the fete
- Shake off dry powder outside before you get in a car or walk into your room.
- Rinse with cool water first. Hot water can set some pigments.
- Use a gentle soap and an old towel. Plan on retiring that towel.
- Soak clothes in cold water right away if you want to try saving them.
Quick checklist
- Black or white base outfit you can ruin
- Closed shoes with grip
- Sunglasses or clear glasses
- Hair tied up and covered
- Barrier layer on your skin
- Small bag, phone in a waterproof pouch
Questions people ask
Can I wear all white to a paint fete?
Yes. White is one of the best choices, because every color shows up on it. Just accept that it will not stay white.
Will the paint come out of my clothes?
Sometimes, but plan as if it will not. Soak clothes in cold water right after the fete for the best chance.
Should I wear sandals?
No. Floors get slick and crowded. Closed shoes with grip protect your feet and keep you on them.
What about my phone?
Put it in a waterproof pouch. Paint and water find their way into everything else.
